your know you are doing something right when greg wilson comes knocking at your door for some disco edit action. such is the life now for croation nu disco gem ilija rudmen. after a series of releases on labels rong, infant and deep freeze, bearfunk were quick to grab dance disorder and wasted no time in asking their studio neighbours faze action to step up. their synth bass, low slung and sleazy remix, with a dose of their trademark strings hits the spot. this sits snuggly with ilijas original which mixes in real bass and guitar with his analog heavy funk laden grooves.

this obscure lost soundtrack for an even more obscure (and also lost and never finished) italia violenta cop movie was recently discovered when i bought the dusty reel tapes from a restaurant owner in fiumicino, a seaside town near rome. panter 777 aka il labirinto di roma violenta aka the maze of violence, he told me, was directed by gervasio giardano in 1981 and was considered too (politically) explicit by the movie production company who dropped the project after the first screening. the soundtrack, an explosion of wahwah funk riffs and juicy analog synthesizers, was composed by an obscure band called nacho patrol. the restaurant owner, who wishes to remain anonymous, was one of the band members and composed most of the tracks. the debut record of ritmolider kaleidoscope is a traditional studio work with live performance and classic analog sound. being in the era of nu disco and re edits the author has tried to find his own way of making music based on traditional methods of performance. and hes got a beautiful symbiosis of instrumental improvisations and electronic melodiousness. at the begining of the record theres a superb remix by the beat broker - deep, groovy synth disco, highly recomended for dancefloor! the second track is a journey into obscure psychedelic funk with lots of improvisations and atmospheric tunes....a pity so sweet percussions are added so late. b2 tonight at the discotheque will carry you away by the real soviet disco vibe. a beautiful arp solo softly flowing through amazing effects and acoustic drums focused on free played funky basslines. the original version of kaleidoscope is also a very interesting one. a mood of this composition is changed all the time. the first seconds of the track you hear a tender melodic solo which makes you feel calm and relaxed, then you get the groove coming from an agressive arpeggio and dinamic percussion. soon this feeling gets interrupted with a sudden slap bass impromtu playing together with a synthy accompaniment, and it turns into another feeling, and so on... this really reminds of kaleidoscope effect!

(dumb irresponsible youth), their new house-oriented project. sierra sam (toysforboys, einmaleins, trapez) and marcus vector (toysforboys, nomor, playground) recently released their first joint effort for contexterrior. working together once again, this time around theyve put aside their usual dark techno inclinations, opting instead for uninhibited house led by analog percussion sounds. drumroll, please… >pimp my saw< is a frenzy layers and layers of toms, kicks, steeldrums and clicks. >screw it up< is a more melodic affair, with the classic build-up and tension that defines classic house material, plus a hint of latino finesse. on the flip, >hammer of love< closes things out with a shuffly balance between the organic and the artificial, with looming atmospheric ambience to set a darker tone. these three tracks are the perfect tools to use where the sun dont shine. (that would be the nightclub, you pervert!)

after 17 years of working together, tejada & leviste are back in the studio again putting their modular synths to good work. m tracks (m as in modular) features 4 analog workouts in varying styles. m track 1 features a melodic deep, yet driving track reminiscent of the duos best known work. m track 2 and 3 showcase a trackier sound focusing on basic elements while m track 4 turns in a much more experimental direction. the approach to this ep was a very fun, hands on process. analog sequencers are used to drive the various modular synths and their components. this process allowed for a more organic feel as the unstable electronics change over time as well as the manual changing of parameters over time. systems used include doepfer and frostwave sequencers, and modular systems consisting of cwejman, doepfer, harvestman and bananalogue modules. analog drum machines aided in the rhythms, however m track 3 was generated from pure modular hardware including the drums.

without a doubt, chicago native huge hephner has garnered quite the reputation as an international playboy - pimpin and whorin his way into the electronic music worlds stream of consciousness. however, behind the tough guy persona is a highly underrated producer with an unbridled passion for music and love of the analog gear he uses to produce such increasingly in-demand sounds. it is this perversion that lends meaning to the title of his debut album, nymphotech, released on none other than the label that helped launch his career, siteholder records. unflinching in its house vibe, yet relentless in its dance floor attack, nymphotech is a highly impressive debut album by a producer who continues to up his game with each successive release. hephner kicks off part one of a two-part vinyl album sampler with the chugging acid burner sharing the same title as the album. nothing less than 4 a.m. packed club material, to play nympotech at any other time would be a failure to recognize this bombs full potential. jack n coke is undoubtedly huges nod to his hometowns house legacy, showcasing a flirtatious bass line that screams funk in all caps. wheres the acid? fans of hephner might ask. leave that up to freaky $ean da don, featuring the vocal debut of huges body guard and reputed hitman who bears the same name as the tracks title. if nymphotech is any indication of whats to come from mr. hephner, we can only hope huge will manage to stay out of jail long enough to produce a follow-up

is there more to life than house music? for the swedish dj/producer mikael nordgren: probably not. since 2004, he has been steadily churning out some of the best future house tunes from his studio located in stockholm. his productions have been released under many aliases including dmalicious, 12th floor and for get physical under the mighty moniker of tiger stripes. the blacker the music, the sweater the sound. a potential anecdote that fittingly could have inspired mikael when he composed the warm and supple portion of detroit fueled funk that is, blackroom entertainment. yet another presentation of his programming prowess and ability to mold and mend melodies into a sophisticated groove. especially utilizing his signature catchy drums to get the vibe going, then introducing a melodic synth stab before the track takes you away with complex variations of rhythmic lead sounds. abacus may remind listeners of his stellar mad at me ep released last fall on get physical - albeit reformed with a more analog approach. springing tones get the groove rolling before it is taken over by a cabal of sci-fi sounds, at which point a thick, modulated analog bass sound ups the overall energy. the lack of audio imagery is little if none, as the sounds invoke so many moods, feelings and sensations that only a seasoned dj and knowledgeable producer could fabricate such a convincing theme. blackroom entertainment ep again showcases mikaels ability as a formidable contributor to house music

rhodes accents and analog synth melodies, while a vocal chorus ups the soul ante during the marching strut of who am i, a beautiful example of timeless house music if there ever was one. in futuristic funk, a looped voice incessantly repeats too late now, thereby adding a touch of delirium to the tunes stomping swing, after which the vocal line expands into the chanted pray for brighter days / too late now / lose myself in the future / too late now. warmed by old-school synth flourishes, congas, and rhodes melodies, millers rich and seductive club music makes surrender the only possible proposition and a release so rarely deep and musical, which is therefore not to be missed.
